I love my work :: Studio Calico weekly sketch

Hi everybody! I have an honour to share first February sketches with Cirque‚ kits.

a7ebf770a3e649875ab59027404a39b64cd7a595

I chose to work with a scrapbook sketch based on April’s layout. I love simple sketches becasue than you can mess with an example (which in other hand is a perfection). But the idea is to use the sketch and create something in your own style.

my work 1

I was inspired by two things this time: with my favourite ‚Europe map’ stamp and die and by the huge letters which I used to create white on white title (the alphabet is coming from the January ‚Ivy Tower’ add-on).

my work 4

I used the pictures from my last trip to Spain where I was teaching mixed media classes. The layout is about my dreamy scrapbook work, about amazing people I meet in various countries, etc… I just love my job, it incorporates all the things I adore in my life: art, people, travelling, different languages and customs.

my work 2

This layout remind me that my beloved Poland is not that far away from the rest of the beautiful places in Europe :)

From start to finish tutorial :: silk screens.

Today I would like to show you my start to finish course using Far, far Away‚ kits. In this tutorial I show in how many different ways you can use your silkscreens from the JanuaryMagic Carpet‚ add-on. I also added a little tip how to create a title using fabulous ‚Mia‚ (or ‚Alyra’) alpha stamps.

DSC06411
Let’s begin. First of all we have to prepare all basic supplies like papers, embellishments, Color Theory acrylic paint, ink pads, stamps and a photo – of course.

Talking about the photo – this little lady on a picture… adorable, isn’t she? This is Jane, beloved daughter of our fabulous Paige Evens :) She ‚borrowed’ me this picture to scrap when I wrote on her Instagram how inspired I am looking at these amazing colours.

DSC06415
OK – coming back to the point. I cuted 12×12 ombre paper to the A4 format – this is one of my favourites lately. I decided to use this outstanding ‚+’ silk screen and white acrylic paint to create a background pattern. This is easy. As you already know you don’t need anything more than acrylic paint (or gesso), a piece of thick cardboard or an old credit card or a palette knive. Just stick the silk screen into the place of your choice (I chose the edge between green and white area in the centre of ombre) and spread the paint.

DSC06417
I repeated it for a few times becasue my intention was to blend both sides of the background.

DSC06421
During this time when the backgournd is drying we can create an extraordinary embellishment using the second ‚shine’ silk screen. I took a piece of white cardboard (I think that it was a piece of paper from the stamp’s pack…) and my favourite acrylic ‚Sunny Day‚ paint. I repeat the same action – stick the silk screen to the background, spread the paint, remove the screen from the paper and clean it immediately. I think this is very important to clean the screens just after use becasue than you can be sure that all of these little holes will be clean, and if they will be clean than your prints will be better, cleaner and sharper. So take care of your silk screens, they deserve to be clean :)

DSC06452

OK, the background and the embellishment are ready, how we can use the third ‚HELLO’ screen? I think that the perfect way is to use it as a title! Yes, I think this is a good idea and I recommend you to try this technique on a layout, however this time, I decided to create a different title for my project. In my cretive team box I received the fabulous ‚Mia’ alpha stamp, when I saw it I knew that I have to use it somewhere. I decided to use it on this layout and I knew that I want to get bright, yellow letters. Usually it’s impossible to stamp yellow motives on a dark surface and keep them bright, so my first thought was to stamps it on a white cardboard.

DSC06424

And that’s what I did. I stamped my title on a white paper (so sorry for these ugly pictures but durign winter months in Poland it’s dark in the afternoon, so I used an artificial light).

DSC06428

Next I contoured the letters using thin, black precision pen
… and I cuted all these letters separately using tiny, precision scissors.

little Jane 2

I started to stick the photo and other elements to the background.

DSC06436

During the combining process I thought that it would be nice if I add a phrase stamp – also from the ‚Magic Carpet‚ scrapbook add-on. Once again – I knew that it won’t be satisfactorily visible on a dark green background so it was a quick decision – I used white embossing powder. I adore to mix various techniques like here – stamping, masking, paint, embossing, layering… the mix of all these actions give a special feeling to the project, especially when you look at it in real life.

little Jane in the rain
This is it. You can check looking at the final layout how I placed the embellishments and how it works together on a surface. I always think about blending elements, I like when everything create one, harmonious totality.
I hope you felt inspired. I think that I show you that you can use three different silk screens in three various ways (and probably far more…). Don’t be affraid. this is not a dirty hobby. I am a mixed-media scrapbooker but believe me – I don’t like dirty hands. You can be mixed-media and clean (and happy). Just take care of your tools and everything will be easy.
I wish you a happy day full of silk screens actions :)

‚Walden’ kits reveal.

Walden_header

In a few days we will welcome November – probably not ‚the best month ever’, but… we need something between warm autumn and christmassy winter to fill the pill of creative power. Bad news – not this time! The upcoming month will be full of inspiration, art-journal Paint.Plan.Play classes ideas and happy playing with ‚Walden‚ kits!

remember it remember it remember it

This is my first main kit only project made with ‚Walden‚ scrapbook kit. I stuck with b/w shades with some elements of expressing drawing. I am in love with this double A4 project format nowadays. Besides – this grey scale wood pattern paper is fabulous. I found the same trees on my latest photo, mixed it with vellum, blend it all together and… voila.

your hugs make everything better

Single A4 page without ANY paint, splashes, drawings… I am proud of myself :) It’s still so hard for me to not to use any media on a project. All the elements you can find in the main kit plus some November printables and a real leaf.

4fe0dac1f4bd5d112fe334db_678x664

Now it’s time for the projects mixed with this month’s add-ons: my favourite ‚Concord‚ combined by Celine Navarro especially for her upcoming ‚Mini Book’ classes, christmassy ‚Pine Hill‚ and embellishment add-on with fabulous exclusives inside – ‚Baker Bridge‚.

 StudioCalicoNov2014AddOn1NEW-1_(1)

Are you already inspired by these supplies?! I can’t even imagine how amazing will be Celine’s mini album made with them! And below is my layout inspired by this cool exclusive wood veneer world globe.

never stop exploring

I used a piece of fabric, than gesso and stamping plus various watercolour techniques plus white embossing on the photo and at the end – stitching! It was so fun! I love such rich projects and there is so much fun during the creative process! I still have lots of goodies from the ‚Concord‚ addon and I’m sure I will prepare something more with them soon.

mentally somewhere else

And my last layout made with a mix of add-ons and scrapbook kit where I was focused on main ‚Baker Bridge‚ embellishments. I didn’t use the vellum leaves, but I will! They are so inspiring! Here I decided to stay in a simple, row composition with a cuted photo combined with some pieces of papers from the main ‚Walden’ kit. I was in love with this wooden, transparent alphabet – I think it’s cool and it suits perfectly to the fallish projects.

StudioCalicoNov2014AddOn3-1

See these cute washi animals?! and the tags?! and… everything? I am sure that some new projects will appear in the gallery in November, if I will only have enough time to work. Yes, it will be busy month – I will be travelling to Spain once again teaching classes in Madrid, there are lots of family parties as well and mine and my best friend’s birthdays! I still didn’t prepare my ‚wish list’ and I have no idea if it’s possible to organize a b-day party this year… so as you can see I have many extra things to do this month. I hope you will get all the things you want during the reveal night, that you will find lots of good ideas and inspiration in a Studio Calico gallery and I can’t wait for your own projects made with ‚Walden’ goodies. Kisses!

interview with love…

One of my favourite scrapper and beloved friend from the scrapbook industry  – Lizzy Kartchner – tagged me in a  Q&A blog tour. She sent me few questions which I will try to answer in today’s post. Thank you Elizabeth for push me in it! :)
BTW – earlier I was tagged also by Lory but I didn’t have enough time to play between my trips, but thank you too my friend for that nomination :*

DSC05572

   1. What am I working on right now?

Well – like usually, I am working on a few things at the moment. I don’t like to focus all my mind into only one project. So right now I am painting a really huge paiting to my living room. I am working on it at my friend’s workshop (he is a painter and we know eachother for a long time, since our studies), becasue I don;t have enough place at my flat. The second big things is – that I am writting a new article for French entreARTistes magazine about some new media and simplet techniques plus, I’m illustrating it with three various scrapbook projects.

2. How long does it take me to create a project?

Usually a layout takes me 2 or 3 hours. It depends if I am using lots of different media or if it’s a clean &  simple one (yep, I almost can see this smile on your faces ‚she doesn’t creat c&s pages!’). So yes – it takes me a while to grab all the things, print the photos and start the creative process.

3. What are my favorite things to create with at the moment?

Of course paper + various paints. You know how much I am in love with watercolour media like: ecolines, neocolors, gelatos, mists, sprinklers, refillers, etc… now I am also interested in acrylics so I am looking for new ideas according to this new medium in my scrapbooking drawer.

4. How do I become inspired and stay inspired?

This is interesting and I have no idea if I can easily answer on this question. It would be easier to write when I am not inspired at all (you know, there are some days during every month that you prefer to lay on a coutch and you don;t want to be inspired by anything) :) I am constantly inspired by everything what is around me. B y the weather and the season of the year, by the light, by my son, by my friends… I am often inspired by fashion, design, TV commercials. Of course I adore Pinterest – when I am lost I love to dive into various mood boards and look for… anything, because anything or everything can be an inspiration.
I can count on my monthly inspiration from Studio Calico, always. When I receive my monthly box full of scrapbook goodies I always feel inspired by the exclusive products, new colours. Sometimes it’s a challenge for me when the packages are full of various patterns and shades which are not my favorites, but I appreciate that and usually it forces me to stay focus and I make pretty nice projects than.

5. What is my signature style?

Yyyyyy… not ‚messy’, not very ‚artsy’… I think it’s a perfect mix of harmony in forms and colours with a pop of artistic touch on them. Watercolours and subtle palettes are my recognition elements, or maybe I’m wrong?! I don’t know, I can’t define myself in any words.

DSC05637

6I am tagging my favourite cardmakers and great artist – Danielle Flanders and my dear friend Mona Głód – Polish scrapbooker and PL-maker. See you next Monday on their blogs!

Acrylic paint for everybody.

Today I would like to introduce you to the new kind of medium available in Studio Calico shop. Since last few weeks you can enrich your creative supplies list with the lovely range of Color Theory acrylic paints. My tiny tubes are already at home and I thought that it would be nice if I will write few words about acrylic paints in general before you will start playing with them, plus – I made a quick tutorial. Here we go!

DSC05269

Few basics – acrylics are water-based paints, which means taht you don’t have to use terpentine to thin the paints and clean your brushes. One big advantage of acrylics is wonderful versality. Using them you can achieve many different effects and a variety of styles. For example you can apply them either very thickly (using f.e. palette knives) or very thinly and all sort of combinations between. The consistency and texture of acrylics can be changed with acrylic medium and gel, or modelling paste and water. You can use them on various surfaces: wood, paper or canvas. Once primed up with gesso acrylics can be applied on almost any surface such as fabrics, cloths, clay, etc… These paints dry so very fast, so remember to squeeze only a small amount out of a tube at a time. Acrylic paint is PERMANENT – so please be careful and watch out on your cloths and furnitures :) Unlike a watercolour the dry paint is insoluble and can be over-painted without any concerns – that’s a good part about they permanent nature (that it can be painted over). And the last basic thing – always clean your brushes when changing to a new colour to avoid mudiness. Before you begin mixing paint, make sure you know the ins and outs of the color wheel (you can get lots of informations from Lisa’s ‚Color Studio’ classes). Knowledge of pigment blending can save you time and frustration, as well as rescue a background from unsightly mistakes.

+      +      +

OK, it should be enough for the begining. I still know lots of various acrylic techniques and I hope I will be able to share them with you one day. Meanwhile I have something easy but eye-catching for all acrylic beginners (and not only) – foil layer.
Once you are not familiar with acrylic paints, you are not sure how they work and you are affraid of ruin the background paper – this method is for you.

DSC05224

Start from the basic composition. Prepare the background, papers, embellishments and paints. In this technique you can paint using brushes, palette knives, finges or you can put the paint directly from the tube – like I did.

DSC05235

You will need a piece of foil (it can be a recycle packaging, plastic bag or a piece of kitchen foil…). I put A5 white paper under my foil to know the area which should be covered by the paint. If everything is ready, you can start appling paint of the foil. It can be totally accidental (but rememebr what I was writting about mixing colours).

DSC05238Now take a brush, or a piece of paper or palette knive (like on the picture), and spread and blend paint a little bit. You can ‚draw’ some lines on it. it’s the easiest way to give an interesting element to this painting. You can also cover the foil with a smooth, thick surface of paint and scratch some words on it…

DSC05239

While the painting on a foil is ready (remember you can’t wait to long becasue the paint will be dry), you should take a piece of paper and put your painting upside down. And now – you can make a print using your paiting. You can make it on a random piece of paper and use it later as a layer of your project, you can make a print directly on your background or just leave an excess of paint on a paper…

DSC05243I decided to make a small print and leave it for my future project. I put the foil upside down and I used a brayer to make sure that everything will transfer on a paper. I rolled my brayer over it a couple of times and peel the foil away from the surface. I was left with a print and almost dry piece of plastic bag with fabulous painting on it.

DSC05248

I find this idea very comfortable for all of us. You can use a transparent layer on your project. You can place it wherever you want. There will be no dirt, no blobs of paint – for me it’s a great thing. Of course you can make the same thing directly on a background if you want. Experiment with colours and shapes is fun! Even if you don’t like what you have done it’s not a big deal. Just brush over this ‚mistake’ with gesso. I do this quite often lately :)

DSC05256

Coming back to the tutorial. I put few extra layers on a foil (pale patternred paper plus vellum and another white paper). I decided to enrich this project with other techinique – you already familiar with watercolour, aren’t you. This time I was using Color Theory refillers instead of custom watercolours – they worked great!

DSC05259

When watercolour part was totally dry I put it into the the letterpress station and make a ‚hello’ print using black ink (of course you can’t see this letterpress effect on the picture, but believe me it looks sooo good).

DSC05260

Now it’s only few staps to the end. Stick everything together, combine the layers, add embellishments and pictures, glue the title… I used those lovely wood veneer alphabet from the ‚Whitman’ scrapbook add-on, but I coloured it using black marker.

how YOU doin'

That’s all. It was easy, right? :) The technique is for everybody. It isn’t stressful at all. It’s quick and looks spectacular. Have fun! I am waiting for your own trials! If you have any questions please ask them in the comments below this post.

Poet-Society_Header

‚Poet Society’ stole my heart since I first saw it. I love every little piece of these scrapbook kits this month, literally every element! There are so many NEW, exclusive things! I adore the silkscreen – on, so much!

sbmain-3_(1)

I was using lits of Color Theory acrylic paints this month and made some tutorials with them – I will publish them later. The colours – oh, so subtle, feminine… everything is dreamy. But I lost my creativity last weeks and even if the kits are awesome – playing with them this month was so hard for me. Sorry for the results, I was doing everything I can, hope you will find something what you will enjoy

true or false

This is my main kit only project – many various layers of patternred paper blended together, combined with gesso and acrylic paints in few hues. The second main kit only page will be published tomorrow together with a quick from start to finish tutorial.

Poet Society sneaks.

I know what you all thinking… but believe me, the name of the September kits were dicussed few months ago when nobody expected that the live of one of our favourites actors will die :( Studio Calico dicussed the possibility to change the names but the final decision was to stay with previous, ‚Poet society’ name. Felt it would be best to continue with the name and think of it as a tribute to him.

September mood boardThis is my subjective mood board for September. I am so in love with it! [BTW all these pictures are coming from my Pinterest boards]. My first main kit only project is inspired by this palette and mood :) unfortunatelly I can share with you only this one sneak because I’m still working on my next pages.

DSC05144This is totally not my month if you know what I mean… The kits are just fantastic but I am soooooo lazy at the end of vacation! Uhhhhhh… Really I am fighting with myself during last week to sit down and make something… you know, something… really good to inspire you! But nope, nothing’s changes. So please keep your fingers crossed today, send me warm thoughts and maybe finally I will create something! These kits deserve best.

+     +     +

Anyway – there are few good news out there. You can still sign up for a presale, vellum alphas which are this month’s exclusives for subscribers! They are already on my list, waiting to ‚come home’ :)

Sneak_Night_ItemThere are over a million colorful possibilities with these five vellum alphabets in our exclusive Color Theory colors. We took the Mint Hint when you asked for this font to return and when the option came we decided to bring these alphas into the „Lime Light”. Hurry, we don’t expect these to last long!

Hiker’s mini album 4×4.

Today I publish my latest TINY book made with the latest ‚JET’ scrapbook add-on which is ONE OF THE BEST KITS EVER at Studio Calico – thanks to Marcy Penner (kisses :* ). It’s probably not available at the Studio Calico shop now, but there are some lucky people all over the world who bought it at the reveal night. Well – I have an inspiration for all of you. No matter if you grabbed that set of goodies or not – maybe you will feel inspired looking at my mini 4×4 album.

mountains - mini album closed

The cover is closed thanks to the fancy Button & Tie Envelope envelope from the kit. I transformed it into the back and the front of the cover, what is (in my opinion) one of the greatest things I made lately :) ahahahahah it has a CONSTRUCTION (!!!) for me it’s a big deal because my alogical brain can’t constract anything. This is the peak of my technical capabilities – that’s why I am so proud of it. OK – the inner side part:

Are you still here? :) great. I know – it was a lot of photos this time, sorry for that, but you have to believe me that I was resisting myself to not to add more. I have hundreds of pictures from our mountain trip and I love them all :)

+     +     +

For those of you who like the look of this mini I collect a set of supplies which may help you to create something similar to this. What’s important? The size, the format, colours, craft elements (or craft colour as a part of the mini), tags and of course – overlays (transparencies) which add something unique to the project.

mini album selection

What I chose. Two kinds of overlays – both from Studio Calico lines: Brighton Pier and South Market. Next thing – ink pads. I chose only two based colours from the whole range of Color Theory collection. I adore various ready-made titles, espcially those wood veneers from Brighton Pier line. Add a craft feeling to the wholeness – this set of round cork stickers will be fabulous. What I love and what I my ‚must have’ in the mini album are tags. I couldn’t resist and I add few tubes of brand new Color Theory acrylic paint – they are more than just tiny treasures, they are really good! I chose various shades of green and blue, cyan and a pop of coral colour. At the end – good news – ‚Aloha’ Stamp Set is back! It’s perfect for travel minis, so I think it’s a good place to mention about them.

Start the party before the ‚Sandlot’ reveal!

It’s almost reveal over at Studio Calico so that means – that we can start shopping!!! This is an amazing opportunity to minimalize the shipping costs. As an international subscriber I have to care about that and I am so grateful that I can combine my shopping with kits few hours before the subscriber pre-sale (or 24 hours before reveal time if you are not a subscriber). It doesn’t matter if you an international or not, this offer is great for all of us :)

Month by month I’m preparing set of my favourite products. In August we have some fabulous stamp sets in the kits and add-ons so once again it would be nice to enrich our collection of embossing powders. As you already know this time I created few layouts and mini album as well (with amazing ‚JET’ scrapbook add-on combined by Marcy). Thinking about mini album – this set of stamps and craft dies, precision markers and tiny 4×4 album are just made for August – you will see.

2 Workspace Wednesday

This is my ‚workspace’ – as you can see there isn’t a lot of place… this is also my badroom and dining room and I HATE that I have to clean up everything just after I finish my work. But I have no choice. I usually don’t remember where I put something what is needed immediately, to be true – there is always a ‚creative mess’ in my drawers and on the shelves. That’s why the WORKSPACE classes by Marcy is a great opportunity for me to learn how to keep these tiny stash in the proper order. If you also have such problems in your craftroom this is something for you and you can’t missed it for sure.

Workspace is enrolling now through July 31st at 11:59pm EST. It’s only few days till the end of registation! The first lesson will be posted on Monday, August 4th, and there will be a new lesson posted each Monday and Thursday in August.

Transform your favourite embellishment.

I’m sure that sometimes most of you have such thoughts: ‚Wish I that this embellishment was white not pink’ or ‚Oh my, these letters would be perfect – but this gold glitter?!’ Well I had such situation during my work with ‚Hello, hello’ kits. In the ‚Bonjour’ add-on there were one of my favourite phrases by Heidi Swapp, in silver, silver glitter – it’s not ‚my thing’ if you know what I mean. Anyway, I knew that I adore those stickers so I decided to upcycling them using emboss technique.

I had no idea how embossing powder will be working with glitter surface on such tiny area, but I had to try! I took a special clear embossing ink and I covered whole glitter phrase. Next I sprinkled some Opaque White ZINK embossing powder on it…

I forgot that the foil around the letters will be also covered by the powder. Anyway I took my ZAP heat gun and embossed whole area.

Next I took a craft knife and started to rab the foil just next to the letters. It took a while but I still think that it was worth the effect I get.

I was satisfied when I saw the white, embossed effect :) finally one of my favourite embellishment suit to the project. I was happy! and I started to composing other things on my layout.

Of course I couldn’t miss the watercolour areas. I was painted the top of the page using transparent watercolour papers and blending them with the background. This is always my favourite part!

Next step was stamping. I adore mixing various techniques – embossing, layering, painting and stamping – everything what I need in my work on one layout! It was fun! Besides – I was using beloved Color Theory ink pads, yay!

I collected few favourite stamp words on the acrylic block becasue I want to be sure that all of them will stamp in a perfect rows (well, I am not that perfectionist, but I like to have an order on my project; you have to believe me, that all around me there is always a huge mess during my work).

This is the final effect, I hope you like the idea of changing embellishments :) For me colour is one of the most imporant things in composition, so that’s why I was so happy when I realized that embossing is working with glitter. Hope you will use these trick when you will need it.
